Third night of violence in London

The British Prime Minister David Cameron has cut short his family holiday and returned home to chair a meeting of his government’s emergency committee following a third night of violent rioting across the UK.

Fires are still burning in London this morning, where police say they’ve made more than 300 arrests and charged 69 people since the trouble began.

Youths have also gone on the rampage in Birmingham – smashing windows, ripping out cash points and looting shops – West Midlands Police have made one hundred arrests.

There were similar scenes in Bristol and in Liverpool, cars were set alight and police were pelted with makeshift missiles including golf clubs.

The Metropolitan Police have now deployed an extra 17-hundred officers – with help from 11 other forces – and have also used armoured vehicles to deal with the riots.
