The EPA has confirmed that it's inspectors have examined 61 domestic wastewater treatment systems in Clare, and that 21 of these have failed.

However, Clare County Council has yet to receive any application for funding under a grant scheme set up to help people who fall foul of the regulations – money is paid to people who have already had works acrried out, and the local authority says it's expecting applications to be made.

It's not yet known how Clare compares with other ways, but the Agency is compiling figures which will also be used as part of their next National Inspection Plan.

It had been reported that the Agency was to step up inspections in Clare in light of the figures, but this has not been confirmed.

However, the Council says it expects to carry out a total of 81 inspections by the end of the year.
