Broadcaster Gay Byrne says the Fianna Fáil’s leader Michael Martin has guaranteed him the party’s support if he decides to run for the Aras.
The former Late Late Show host has revealed that Michael Martin contacted him over the weekend to tell him that Fianna Fáil Oireachtas members could facilitate his nomination as an Independent candidate.
The 77 year old’s name was first mentioned by Clare Fianna Fail TD Timmy Dooley who is also part of a six member committee set up to consider the party’s options regarding the presidency .
Political pundits are today reporting that the Clare Deputy made contact with Gay Byrne’s daughter who lives on the outskirts of Killaloe near Ogonnelloe about her father running for the Aras.
Mr Byrne has not yet made a decision whether to run – he’s due to meet with family next week to discuss the possibility.
