The Irish Marine Survey Office of the Department of Transport has confirmed that from next year, it’ll run additional detailed checks on whether crews are familiar with their ships and trained in emergency measures like abandon ship drills and fire fighting.

Ships that commit the most serious safety violations will be detained in port by the MSO until the problem is rectified.
