Tough year predicted for Clare farmers

The new Chairman of Clare IFA expects another tough year ahead for dairy farmers. 

Some farm groups and politicians have identified over-production of milk as a key factor in falling prices and called on the European Union to introduce mandatory measures to reduce output.

However, with the decision to abolish milk quotas made in 2003, and re-affirmed in 2008, such measures could be politically and legally problematic.

Willie Hanrahan says a lack of demand is another problem facing farmers.
