Town councillors could lead Dáil protest over abolition .

Town Councils in Clare could be leading a protest to the Dáil – or even Aras an Uachtaráin in the fight against their abolition.

Members of Ennis Town Council described Minister Phil Hogan’s plans for local government reform as a hatchet job and a sad day for local democracy as councillors reacted to news of their imminent demise, and planned to fight back.

Independent Councillor Frankie Neylon supported calls from Kilrush Town Council to form a join strategy of opposition including the local authorities in Kilkee and Shannon, but said they should take their protest to Dáil Eireann.

While fellow independent Michael Guilfoyle said he believed the decision to abolish Town Councils was already decided on by government, but he wants President Michael D Higgins to intervene to stop the Minister’s decision.
