Traveller Accommodation Decisions ‘May Revert To Central Government’

A prominent local advocate for travellers has suggested that decisions on their accommodation could be transferred away from Councils to central government.

Clare County Council is among the local authorities who have been criticised for a lack of action in providing sufficient accommodation for travellers, with recent figures showing that it had only drawn down a quarter of money currently allocated for that process.

The Council insists the three separate traveller accommodation projects covered by this 170 thousand euro in funding are at varying stages of development.

Kathleen Sherlock from Ennis, who is organising an event in Dublin tomorrow at which traveller ethnicity will be celebrated, believes a change is needed.
