It's understood that Mr. O'Connell was moving cattle on his land last evening, and had gotten out of his tractor when it moved and struck him.

He was later found by a family member who raised the alarm at 9:50, and while gardaí and emergency services rushed to the scene, he was pronounced dead there a short time later.

The scene was sealed off, and this morning the Health and Safety Authority have begun an investigation, aided by Gardaí based in Ennis.

Mr. O'Connell was in his mid-fifties, was well-known and respected in the local area and Ballynacally TD Pat Breen says he knew him well.

Gerry O'Connell has been described as a hard-working and long-serving farmer who was also well-known in sporting circles.

A number of his children played gaelic games, including son Gearoid who has is a member of the Clare Under-21 side who are due to face Wexford in an All-Ireland Final next week.

Former Clare County Board Chairman and former chair of the Ballyea club Michael O'Neill says the community is rallying around the family in this time of tragedy.

Mr. O'Connell is the second person to have been killed in a farm-related accident in Clare in the space of two weeks, and the 21st in Ireland this year.

He is survived by his wife Frances, their sons David, Paddy and Gearoid, daughters Louise and Emma as well as wider family and friends.
