Tributes Paid to Ennistymon Woman who has Lost Battle with Motor Neuron Disease

Tributes are being paid to an Ennistymon woman whose brave interview about motor neuron disease helped raise awareness about the condition.

Patricia Flaherty has been remembered as a woman who did a lot to open the door on motor neurone following her death on Friday.

It was June of this year when Patricia Flaherty insisted that motor neurone disease had not changed her personality, even if it did have a debilitating effect on her life.

The Ennistymon woman a was diagnosed with the deadly neurological condition in 2011, and by this summer she was confined to a wheelchair and dependent on her family and carers for her most basic needs.

During her emotional invterview. Patricia spoke of how the incurable condition had impacted on her life.

Patricia passed away this weekend, and is survived by her mother, her husband Patrick and their four daughters Hazel, Caroline, Christina and Marion as well as grandchildren, siblings and a wider circle of friends and family.

Her death has been described as a sad day in Ennistymon by the town's Senator Martin Conway, who Patricia helped make people more aware of motor neurone disease, and says that she left a legacy of bravery.

Patricia Flaherty will be laid to rest in the New Cemetery Ennistymon, following funeral mass at Ennistymon Church tomorrow morning.
