The Teachers Union of Ireland has voted overwhelmingly in favour of an emergency motion instructing its Executive Committee to withdraw from Croke Park 1 – if Croke Park 2 is imposed on its members.
The motion also calls for a ballot on strike action if the new deal is implemented and for a rally of all public sector workers against the proposals.
Meanwhile the Education Minister was greeted by stony silence when he addressed the TUI delegates at their annual conference in Galway.
Ruairí Quinn took to the podium as a handful of delegates held up signs of opposition to the Croke Park 2 proposals.
Minister Quinn told delegates that he awaits the outcome of other unions’ ballots on the new deal with interest.
And he was heckled as he called for teachers to work with the Government to build a better economy.
