UHL Advised To Boost Staffing For Infection Prevention Team

University Hospital Limerick has been warned to boost staffing numbers on its infection prevention and control team.

The UL Hospitals Group recently completed an examination of the deaths of 74 patients who had contracted the CPE superbug, with the findings yet to be published, while the Limerick City Coroner is investigating a list of 29 deaths highlighted by a whistle-blower.

The Irish Examiner reports that HIQA has written to CEO Colette Cowan, following an inspection in September, saying that issues “that may present a serious risk” to patients, visitors and staff had been identified.

The Health Watchdog has said that despite the implementation of a number of measures, an inspection has found that new cases and clusters of CPE continue to be identified, and has ordered that additional supports be put in place.
