The horse drug known as Bute – which is potentially harmful to humans – has entered the human food chain in France.

The British Agriculture Minister David Heath has confirmed the source as three horse carcasses exported from Britain.

The drug had NOT been found in tests on products made by the food giant Findus.

Meanwhile, the Food Safety Authority of Ireland has confirmed that Rangeland Foods is withdrawing some batches of burgers after they tested positive in the UK for between five and 30 per cent horsemeat.

The burgers were used in the catering and wholesale sectors and contained beef supplied from Poland.
