The government has been given a year to inform the United Nations of steps it’s taken to compensate women who were abused at the Magdalene Laundries.
The UN’s Committee Against Torture has called on the government to establish an inquiry into abuse at the laundries, and to prosecute those responsible.

Justice Minister Alan Shatter has said he will examine the recommendations closely.
Sinn Fein TD Mary-Lou McDonald says an inquiry and redress scheme for the Magdalene women is long overdue.
