Update Expected on Clare Water Restrictions

Residents in four Clare communities expect to find out later today if water restrictions are going to be lifted.

In Corofin and Ruan the HSE Irish Water and Clare County Council imposed a ban on drinking or bathing in the water due to an algal bloom on Inichiquin lake.

That came into effect last week and the lake remains closed to visitors.

While in Kildysart and Coolmeen today marks the 25th day when people there have been unable to drink their tap water – here it's due to a high level of maganese.

An update is expected later.

Separately, it's reported that Irish Water knew about elevated levels of lead in the water supply in parts of Limerick five days before residents were warned against drinking it.

Over 2,000 people living on the north side of the city have been told not to drink the water or prepare food with it.

The Irish Times reports that Irish Water met with the HSE last Friday to discuss concerns about lead levels – but only advised residents on Tuesday of the problem.

Pregnant women and young children in particular have been told not to drink the water in affected areas.
