Ambassador Rooney is well-known in Ireland as one of the founders of the American Ireland Funds which are dedicated to building bridges of peace, culture, and charity in Ireland and Northern Ireland.

He has also funded the annual Rooney Prize for Irish Literature to highlight the work of Irish writers under the age of 40.

The ambassador travels to Clare today ahead of the long awaited opening of pre clearance facilities at Shannon Airport … the service was originally due to be up and running at the end of July but was slightly delayed due the electrician’s strike ..

Along with inspecting the facilities Ambassador Rooney is also expected to meet the families of the US workers who have re-located to the mid west to operate the custom and border service.

The Ambassador has a number of appointments around the county over the coming days and later this morning he will be in Ennis to visit the Clare FM studios where he’ll appear as a guest on Morning Focus at 9 am.
