Barack Obama has thanked the Taoiseach for the controversial use of Shannon Airport as a fuel stop for US troops going to Afghanistan.
The US President made the comments during the Saint Patrick’s day reception for Brian Cowen and his wife at the White House.
It comes as recent figures show the state has spent almost 18 million Euro on security at the Mid West Airport in the past seven years – 14.5 million on Garda cover and 3.3 to army personnel.
