The Taoiseach has given his backing to moves which would decriminalise possession of a small amount of drugs.
Leo Varadkar says the criminal punishment for drug users with small amounts is a barrier to moving on with their lives.
A new national drugs policy launched today also includes plans to expand the role of midwives who specialise in dealing with addicted mothers.
