Water Levels In East Clare Expected To Rise This Evening

Water levels on the Lower River Shannon in East Clare are expected to rise this evening following the increase of water discharge from Parteen Weir today.

The ESB has increased the flow of water to 470 cubic metres per second in response to rising waters in Lough Derg.

Clare County Council area staff, Clare County Fire & Rescue Service, The Defence Forces and Clare Civil Defence are continuing to provide support in Springfield, while providing transport for residents of 12 homes isolated by floodwaters.

The ESB has advised that levels in Lough Derg may reach 2009 levels in the coming days and, as a result, the release of water through Parteen Weir may yet increase up to 500 cubic metres per second.

Head of Communications Bernadine Moloney says they're continuing to monitor the situation.

Meanwhile, the Taoiseach has told all government departments to prepare detailed plans on how to tackle the recent flooding and bad weather.

Enda Kenny says he wants a co-ordinated response to the adverse weather and to find out what needs to be done to help flood victims.

He has also asked for a detailed brief on a new long term forecasting system that could allow for better preparation for future storms.

Flooding in many parts is likely to be compounded today, with a 24-hour rainfall warning in place for parts of Leinster and Munster.

Met Eireann has forecast up to 35 milimeters of rain in places.
