Local representatives have welcomed the announcement that An Post is to keep it’s key role in supplying moneys to welfare recipients.
Following what the government describes as a competitive tendering process, An Post secured the contract to administer cash social welfare payments.
The deal runs for up to six years, and had been seen as crucial by Clare postmasters in maintaining the viability of the county’s rural post offices.
Clare’s Labour TD Michael McNamara is hopeful these fears will now be eased, and is also confident the decision will allow for fraud to be minimised.
