West Clare Councillor Wants More Powers To Help Domestic Abuse Victims

A West Clare Councillor has called for a change to national legislation to allow Councils help victims of domestic abuse.

Kilrush Councillor Ian Lynch has sought to eliminate red tape which means a victim of domestic abuse can't get social housing when they co-own a home, even if that's with the abuser.

Clare Gardaí dealt with over 400 cases of domestic disturbance last year, and Councillor Lynch says he himself has worked with people caught up in this situation.

The Council says it's working by a series of Social Housing Assessment Regulations which were introduced in 2011, but Councillor Lynch thinks they need to be changed.
