West Clare representatives admit its likely that one of the two town councils in their area could face the chop under government proposals to reform local authorities.
Next month the Environment Minister Phil Hogan will publish details of planned changes to town councils with fears many could be abolished as part of efforts to cut 10 million euro off the local authority bill.
Clare County Councillor James Breen believes the municipal bodies in the county should be done away with in, given the economic down turn.
However Kilrush representative Marion McMahon Jones insists the town councils provide an essential service to local communities but accepts some cut backs are necessary.
