Campaigners are hoping that the Western Rail Corridor can be prioritised for completion in light of a need to provide social distancing on public transport in the months to come.
The extension of the railway line is one of a number of projects proposed by the National Bus and Rail Union for completion by the next government, in a letter written to Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and other party leaders.
The proposal to extend the Ennis-Athenry line to Tuam, and then to Claremorris was scrapped during the last recession.
