Reaction To Mother And Baby Home Report

The Mother and Baby Homes Commission of Investigation report was published yesterday after five years of research.

Out of the 18 homes examined, 9,000 children died there – a much higher level of infant mortality than in the community.

56,000 unmarried mothers – from 12 years old to women in their 40s – and 57,000 children lived in the institutions.

On Wednesday’s Morning Focus, Gavin Grace spoke to Anna Corrigan, of the Tuam Babies Family Group – whose brothers are two of the 796 infants said to have died at the home – and to Rita McCarthy, Kilrush Historian and contributor to the report on the history of the County Clare nursery, as well as Bishop Fintan Monahan, the Bishop of the Killaloe Diocese.
