Clare Footballers One Win Away from Promotion

The Clare Seniors have taken another massive step towards promotion to division 3 football next year with a 3-21 to 2-10 win over Carlow this afternoon in Cusack Park.

At half time the banner men had just a three point lead at 1-10 to 2-04, with David Tubridy kicking 1-03 in the opening half, Sean Collins and Martin O’Leary kicked two points each in the first half, while Shane McGrath Gary Brennan and Shane Hickey added one each.

Second half goals from O’Leary and Brennan saw Colm Collins side dominate in the latter half, while David Tubridy brought his final tally to 1-09 with 6 more points in the second half.

Results elsewhere saw Tippery assure their promotion with a 5-16 to 0-16 win over Leitrim, while Wicklow remain in contention for the 2nd promotion spot with Clare, after beating Waterford  2-14 to 0-12.

Clare now travel to Antrim next Sunday, where as little as a one point win will guarantee them promotion. Wicklow are third on the table, one point behind Clare, and take on Tipperary next Sunday. If Wicklow win and Clare lose the Wicklow men will get promoted, while a Wicklow win and Clare draw would see them level on points, at which point it comes down to scoring difference, with Clare +34 and Wicklow at +18 going into the final round.

Speaking after the win Clare Manager Colm Collins refused to rest on the laurels of their win and told Clare FM “We have nothing won, we have to win our last game and get promoted. End of.”
