Keane In Race To Be Fit For Euro Opener

Robbie Keane is in a race against time to be fit for Ireland's Euro 2016 opener against Sweden on June 13th.

The captain was named in Martin O'Neills 23 man squad after the 2-1 defeat to Belarus last night despite struggling with a calf injury.

Everton midfielder James McCarthy has been included in the squad after recovering from a hamstring problem.

One player not so fortunate with injury was Harry Arter who misses out due to a damaged groin.

But O'Neill admits he could come in to the fold if another player is forced to withdraw.

David Forde also misses out on a place in the 23 man squad after Keiren Westwood was picked instead.

Westwood hasn't played for his country since last June's friendly with England while Forde made four starts in the qualifying campaign, including the 1-1 away draw with Germany.

David McGoldrick, Darron Gibson, Eunan O'Kane and Callum O'Dowda also miss out on a place in O'Neill's squad.

While, Stephen Quinn, David Meyler and Aiden McGeady are on the plane to France.
