Lengthy Discussion Expected at County Convention

The County Chairman is expecting strong discussion on some of the motions put forward for tonight’s Convention at the Auburn Lodge.

Delegates will be faced with 33 motions, ranging from the availability of Inter-county players to clubs, to the reversal of the seeded draw for the Munster Football championship, while Tubber have put forward a proposal for a major changes to the Senior Hurling championship.

One of the motions expected to draw plenty of debate at tonight’s convention, comes from Tubber GAA, who have proposed changes to the Senior Hurling Championship for next year.

They suggest 20 teams enter an open draw for round one, the loser of which plays a second round to result in 5 winners.

The 1st round winners then join the round 2 winners, along with the Intermediate champions to form 4 groups of 4.

This proposal would see 5 teams enter a relegation group, with one side making the drop to Intermediate.

County Board Chairman Michael McDonagh admits the motions with regard to structural changes to competitions will probably take time.

Following the controversial decision to seed the Munster Football championship in 2014, Motions for Munster council include changes to that system, Cooraclare look for a "discontinuation of the preferential status given to Cork and Kerry", while St Josephs Miltown Malbay phrase it that the championship in 2015 be played as an open draw system.

After an historic year for Clare GAA in which the Senior and Under 21 hurlers, the availability of inter county players to their clubs is another matter addressed by Clubs.

Davy Fitzgerald has previously stated that players will be released for 5 Clare Cup League Games, Clonlara have put forward a motion that Clubs are informed at the start of the league which games they will be available for, while Ballyea say county players should be available for 5 league matches across the campaign.

Tonight’s meeting at the Auburn Lodge is at 6:30.
