Mixed results for Clare boxers at national championships

Ennis Boxer Sally Carrig arrived home last night zealously clutching her  Irish Title having annexed the 63 Kg Girl 4 championship in her first attempt.

Elated and tired after two tough fights on Friday and Saturday , she was absolutely delighted and just a little disappointed for her clubmates Lee Sherlock and Antoinette Keane who were both beaten in their finals last night.

Sherlock who had boxed magnificently in his quarter and semi-final victories last week , found the going a little tough against John Stokes from Mulhuddart Dublin , and bowed out on a 5-0 scoreline. Sherlock never got his rhythmic southpaw combinations going and rarely threatened the orthodox Dubliner.

However there was excellent news shortly afterwards when Kayleigh McCormack from the Kilfenora Club embellished an unbeaten run in Championship boxing with a powerful display to beat Ulster Champion Rosemary Doherty from the Carndonagh club. Kayleigh opened up an unassailable lead in a powerhouse first round and was always on top winning on a 3-0 scoreline for her second National title.

Defending Champion Antoinette Keane from the Ennis club could not emulate her clubmates feat , having annihilated Katie Hyland in the semi-finals . Antoinette never regained that stimulus in the final and lost out on a 6-1 scoreline having sustained an eye injury in the semi-final which hampered her accuracy as the rounds progressed.

Antoinette had to have hospital treatment for the injury after the fight  but is hoping to be back in training next week.
