Moroney to step in as Munster Council Chief following Fitzgerald departure

The head of the GAA’s high-powered Central Competitions Control Committee, and Clare Man Simon Moroney, has been appointed acting chief executive of the Munster Council following the shock departure of CEO, Pat Fitzgerald.

Chairman Sean Walsh informed officials and delegates attending the scheduled January meeting of the council in Limerick city that Mr Fitzgerald had relinquished his post on Wednesday afternoon.

Delegates were told that Pat Fitzgerald is on administrative leave effective from January 2nd 2013 until his contract expires on March 31st 2013 and will not be looking to extend this contract with Comhairle na Mumhan after that.

Last September provincial delegates agreed to extend the contract of Mr Fitzgerald by a further five years to 2018, however the chairman revealed Mr Fitzgerald had written to him subsequently to decline that offer.

Delegates then approved a recommendation that Eire Og’s Simon Moroney will assume the position of acting chief executive from Monday until September 30 of this year.

One of first tasks of the former Clare County Secretary  will be the preparation of documents and reports for the Munster Council’s annual convention which is fixed for the Bunratty Hotel next month.
