The second seed Roger Federer is out, however – the 4-time champion was beaten in four sets by the unseeded Italian Andreas Seppi.
It's the first time since 2003 that the Swiss hasn't made at least the semi finals in Melbourne.
In the womens championship, Maria Sharapove, Simona Halep and Eugenie Bouchard all progressed to Round 4.
