National Hurling and football league round up

Both defending champions tasted defeated in the Allianz League as the battle to avoid relegation took centre stage.

In the football, Mayo upset All-Ireland champions Cork in Castlebar by 1-13 (pr: one-13) to 14 points.

Kerry now leap-frogged Cork into second place in the Division One standings after they beat Monaghan by 1-14 (pr: one-14) to 11 points.

Galway kept their survival hopes alive when they defeated Armagh by 1-20 (pr: one-20) to 18 points.

Those results mean that one from Monaghan, Armagh and Galway can still avoid relegation with one round of games remaining.

In Division Two, Meath’s problems continue after a 1-18 (pr: one-18) to 3-08 (pr: three-eight) defeat in Derry.

Donegal are top of the table after a 1-17 (pr: one-17) to 1-08 (one-eight) win over Antrim while Tyrone were 13 points to 5 winners over Kildare and Laois kept their promotion hopes alive with a three-point win over Sligo.

In the hurling, Tipperary served notice on the rest of the sides in this year’s championship after a stunning victory over league champions Galway at Pearse Stadium.

Shane Burke scored a hat-trick for Tipp as they thrashed their hosts by 4-23 (pr: four-23) to 1-14 (pr: one-14).

The Cork hurlers failed to take advantage of Galway’s slip-up as they suffered a shock one point defeat to Wexford while Waterford beat Offaly by a goal at O’Connor Park.

In Division Two, there were comfortable wins for Limerick and Antrim over Kerry and Down respectively.
