Nolan survives scare to win opening round in Turkey

BOXING

Irish welterweight Adam Nolan survived a third-round knock-down to book his place in the next round of this week’s Olympic qualifying tournament in Turkey.

Nolan was always in control of the scoreboard in his bout against Thomasz Kot of Poland, but he needed to regain his composure after he was knocked to the ground at the start of the third before going-on to win by 14 points to 9.

Later this evening, Joe Ward, Tommy McCarthy and Con Sheehan will also be in the ring.

But there’s already been disappointment for Wicklow light-welterweight Ross Hickey, who lost his bout against his Moldovan opponent.
