Enda Kenny says Joe's charisma and leadership qualities were in evidence from their days in college together.

Mr McDonagh was made famous for singing the Wests Awake on winning the all Ireland Hurling title with Galway in 1980.

He's survived by his wife Peig and three children.

It was Mr McDonagh who presented the Liam McCarthy to Clare captain Anthony Daly after the Banner's victory over Tipperary in the 1997 All Ireland Hurling Final.
