The Afternoon Show – Thursday May 30th 2013

Joining Gavin Grace on today’s edition of The Afternoon Show was Professor Luke Clancy from ASH Ireland. ASH Ireland have welcomed the cabinet decision, which supports Health Minister James Reilly’s plans to introduce plain packaging on all tobacco products on sale in Ireland, by ‘early 2014’. The group has complimented the Minister and the Government of their decision to proceed with this important health initiative and look forward to having plain packs, only, available to Irish consumers from early next year. They say plain packaging is a vitally important tool in tackling the slick marketing of the tobacco industry – and their specific skill at making products seem attractive for young people.

John Rattigan is the Curator of the Clare Museum and joined Gavin in studio to let listeners know about how the Clare museum has been awarded a 2013 Certificate of Excellence from Tripadvisor.com, the world’s largest travel site. The prestigious award, which places Clare Museum in the top-performing 10% of all businesses worldwide on TripAdvisor, is given to businesses that consistently earn high ratings from TripAdvisor travellers. The museum is currently the number one attraction on Tripadvisor out of thirteen reviewed attractions in Ennis.

John Tuohy is the CEO of Nightline and Parcel Motel. The entrepreneur spoke to Gavin about how he created his business from a bedroom in Dublin and how over the years it has grown since 1992 to become the largest privately owned courier network in Ireland – employing 650 staff across its various divisions, the delivery firm achieved a turnover in excess of €40 million in 2011. He discussed entrepreneurship and how the recession is impacting business people nationwide.

Steve Wall, front man of The Walls and The Stunning was also a guest of the show. One of Ireland’s most respected and successful acts, with strong Clare connections, The Walls were formed by brothers Steve and Joe Wall. Previously the main-men in the multi-platinum selling Irish band The Stunning, the brothers are no strangers to writing hit songs. The band recently released their third album Stop the Lights and just like their predecessors, it hit the Top 20 in Ireland on the back of three strong singles and regular airplay. The Walls are coming to Feile an tSamhraidh in Ballyvaughan / Fanore this Saturday. For full details visit www.discoverballyvaughan.com/feile or "Féile An tSamhraidh" and "Burren Summer Festival" on facebook.
